A History of Innovation

 

Brothers Peter and Ernie Harris founded Harris Manufacturing in 1956 and went on to produce the world’s first pontoon boats manufactured by assembly line. Harris patented the “Dolphin” nose cone in 1959, and in 1964 Harris pioneered the process of aluminum anodizing to build corrosion-resistant perimeter fencing. Harris introduced the first pontoons powered by sterndrive propulsion in 1971. Harris is also credited with inventing the first wood-free aluminum transom, an interlocking extruded deck system, the first pontoon with a rear entry gate, and the first power Bimini top.

 

In 2000, Harris Boats became one of the first pontoon manufacturers to be Marine Industry Certified, as part of an industry-wide program to improve customer satisfaction. In 2007, Harris received the prestigious J.D. Power and Associates award for “Highest Customer Satisfaction with Pontoon Boats.”
